I am looking to buy a second hand laptop for some hobby writing. One I am really interested in has 2GB of RAM while another has 4GB. What is the difference and impact?

RAM stands for random access memory. RAM is essential for any computer as it is tasked with the storage of data for major programs and processes. This is done to make such information easy to access, thereby resulting in faster computer performance overall. Data is never permanently stored on the RAM, but rather features data for the programs and processes being used at that time.
To answer your second question, the amount of RAM required depends entirely on what you plan on doing with your computer. 2GB of RAM is more than enough for word processing and basic use, such as Microsoft Office. The rquirement for more RAM is when what you are doing involves more processing, such as multitasking (running multiple programs) or doing something that requires a lot of power, such as online gaming.
At the moment, 4GB of RAM is very common in the market as it offers enough power for multitasking and things like gaming.
