I have heard a lot about lung cancer but probably for the first time I have come across emphysema. I have noticed that emphysema and lung cancer are being used quite interchangeably. For this reason, I would like to know that if emphysema and lung cancer are different or different in any way.

In simple words, Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in lung tissues while Emphysema is a case in which the lung tissues are destroyed mainly as a result of intensive cigarette smoking. One thing which is common in both conditions is the decrease in functioning of the lungs by reduction in proper supply of oxygen from the air space into the blood vessels. In emphysema the elastic nature of the lungs gets destroyed as a result of immense smoking which makes the lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide in the normal way thus making breathing harder. It is worth-mentioning here that Lung cancer is also a complication of smoking but occurs when one of the lung cells starts to grow and the division becomes uncontrollable.
