    awww how cute!! You could say in PERSON:

    I know we have had a friendship for 3 years. I was wondering if you wanted to take it to the next step? Then say if you say no, then that's okay but I don't want that to ruin our friendship. Then if she says yes then say something like and if we end up breaking up, I still don;t want it ruining our friendship. She will respect the fact you are man enough to ask her in person and that you would be polite about it.
