From the first time I heard it, I loved Frankie Valli's ''Grease.'' The combination of Valli's Jersey nasality and the Bee Gees' lemon-meringue production made for a unique musical beast: street-tough disco. And from the first time I saw it, I loathed the movie to which it was attached. Even though I'm far from a child of the '50s, Grease represented the phoniest, most plastic type of nostalgia I'd ever seen. John Travolta was as charming as he often is, but the movie was — and, for me, remains — so cutesy, so grating, and so banal that it makes Happy Days reruns look like the work of Quentin Tarantino. I just wished ''Grease'' had been included in the Four Seasons musical, Jersey Boys, currently ripping it up on Broadway. To paraphrase the lyric: it doesn't have meaning, but it does have groove.
