    I'm sorry that this won't answer your question, but it may help someone like myself that has a similar problem.  My kitchenaid elect. cooktop wouldn't work at all.  No popped breakers.  Owners manual said check breakers and wiring.  Had trouble finding anything solutions on line.  We paid a Sear repairman to come out.  He took it apart and reset something inside the cooktop without replacing any parts. 130 dollars later our cooktop worked great for a week and then the same problem.  Checked online again and someone recommended killing power to the unit for at least a minute.  This reset the system and its working again.  I hope this helps someone.
