Nobody cares about cricket.

Specifically, nobody cares about the One Day Internationals which are going on at the moment.  After the Ashes, the current ODI series against Australia seems quite boring and pointless.  What can the cricket authorities do to make 50-over cricket exciting again, or should it be scrapped altogether?

Let’s be honest, after the excitement of this summer’s Ashes, a 50-over game against Australia is hardly the stuff to get the blood pumping is it? And, whilst the players probably won’t publically admit it, I’m sure they feel the same way. It’s not a game that anyone will be losing any sleep over, which is perhaps the reason for the lack of outcry over England’s two poor second innings run chases. If an achievable runs chase had been passed up twice in the second innings of an Ashes test there’d be outrage and massive disappointment, but as it is, no one really cares.  What can be done to make cricket more exciting?  I guess we could shorten the match to those exciting opening 10 overs and the run fest that is the last 10 overs and then... oh. Well, what really can be done to create interest in ODIs then?  Perhaps not scheduling seven basically meaningless ODI matches for after an Ashes test. Maybe cut it down to 40 overs, or maybe just play less of it and then only for actual proper trophies?  What is for sure is that something has to be done, and soon, to save us all from the mind numbing site of Paul Collingwood keeping it tight with his soul destroying bowling in the middle overs.
