US President Barack Obama on Tuesday confidently vowed America would emerge from its economic crisis stronger than ever, in excerpts from his debut address to a joint session of Congress.

Obama admitted that the US economy may be weakened and the nation's confidence shaken in "difficult and uncertain times."

But in a show of outward confidence at odds with gloomy economic data, he said: "Tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before."

Obama warned that the crisis should not determine his nation's destiny, and that the roots of recovery lay in developing new industries in laboratories, universities and in US fields and factories.

"Those qualities that have made America the greatest force of progress and prosperity in human history we still possess in ample measure," he said.

"What is required now is for this country to pull together, confront boldly the challenges we face, and take responsibility for our future once more."
