An armed group has attacked a police training academy in eastern Pakistan with hand grenades and assault rifles.

Officials say at least 11 people were killed at the academy, near the city of Lahore, and dozens of police personnel are reported injured.

A siege seems to have developed, with gunmen holed up inside the academy and reports that hostages have been taken.

The attack comes less than a month after gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

In that attack, six policemen were killed, while up to 14 gunmen escaped.

Pakistani officials said it was too early to say who was responsible for Monday's assault in Lahore.

    'Firing continuing'

The Lahore academy has been named by local media as the Manawan police training school. It is on the outskirts of the city, on a road to the border with India.

Several hundred trainees were there when the gunmen struck, local TV reports said.

"The gunmen attacked police recruits from four sides when they were doing their routine morning drills," one police officer was quoted as saying.

The firing was continuing nearly three hours after it started.

The BBC's Jill McGivering, in Lahore, says it appears the assailants had entered the academy dressed in police uniform.

TV footage showed several police officers lying motionless on the ground inside the school.

Elite troops have been called to the academy.

Reports gave varying death tolls. Police official Ali Nawaz told The Associated Press that at least 11 people had died, while 40-45 were being treated for injuries.

"Some gunmen entered the centre, threw hand grenades and then started firing," an intelligence official was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

"They are still in the building and firing is continuing," he said.

Police officer Syed Ahmad Mobin told AP it was "complete panic".

"We do not have any idea how many the attackers are, and how many of them are dead, or hiding in nearby buildings. We are fighting them," he said.

Over the last year Pakistan has seen a dramatic increase in bombs and suicide attacks carried out by insurgents.

The violence has been concentrated on in the country's north-west, near the border with Afghanistan, but there have also been attacks in the country's main cities.
