Escalating differences between the local PAP Singapore administration and the Federation government arrived at an irreconciliable stage. On 9 August 1965, the Singapore state was evicted from Malaysia to become an independent Republic. The LA was renamed Parliament. Since then, PAP Singapore continues to win every GE, each time returned power with an overwhelming majority. A Parliament term is five years, ending in which a dissolution and a fresh GE will be called.
