"To meet higher standards for fuel efficiency, BMW has already announced that it would be bringing a four-cylinder model to the United States. Some have speculated that a turbocharged three-cylinder might be on offer in other areas of the world, but we aren’t sure if this is true.

We expect the North American lineup to consist of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor and at least one petrol inline six-cylinder. While the engines might lose a bit of displacement, the power output isn’t expected to drop. Even though fuel efficiency and emissions are of the upmost importance, BMW are aware that the 3-Series has a reputation to live up to and they dare not upset the sedans faithful following with eco rubbish.

There will certainly be a diesel motor on offer in the U.S and some think that it might be a four-cylinder option, but we’re not so sure. As good as the 335d is, it hasn’t sold that well due to this being America.

We believe that a hybrid will also be announced that will use a range-extended three-cylinder engine connected to an electric motor. This model might include lightweight resistance tires, aerodynamically designed alloy wheels, improved aerodynamics, a solar roof panel for extra energy efficiency, brake energy regeneration, stop-start technology, and pre-heating for the engine, gearbox, and differential.

What you can be sure about is that the new 3-Series will feature Efficient Dynamics technologies."
