    Hi there,

Manchester United sit on top of a list of the world's richest football clubs, based on revenue, after keeping a step ahead of Juventus and Milan last season.

With income of £167.03m for the 2002-03 season, United's revenue is also larger than any sports club in the United States, where baseball's New York Yankees topped an unofficial list with approximate revenues of $280m (£154m).

But by basing the list only on revenue from day-to-day business and ignoring expenditure and debt, the accountants Deloitte Touche have generated anomalies, including placing Leeds United in 16th position despite their debts of £80m.

United's financial muscle keeps them comfortably ahead of Juventus, Milan, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Domestically, however, Deloitte believe Arsenal's erosion of United's dominance on the field will be mirrored in commercial competition when the Gunners move to their new stadium at Ashburton Grove in 2006.

They will then have a 60,000 capacity against their current 38,000 at Highbury. United's Old Trafford can hold 68,000, which translates into a £40m-a-year advantage over the north London club in match-day income.

Paul Rawnsley, of Deloitte's sports business group, said: "In terms of income generation, moving to a new stadium is the key aspect that Arsenal need to close the gap on United."

Despite speculation that football's finances could be heading for a downturn, the report doubts that there will be a drop in earnings from television rights. Dan Jones, the director of Deloitte's sports business group, said: "Broadcast income is the largest single source for most of the clubs and despite the widespread speculation of a collapse in media values, we think this is unlikely."

He said Manchester United's match-day income of £67m per season is more than three times that of their closest Italian rivals.
