Rude Professor

I'll do my best to keep this concise, but I'm nearing the end of my rope with a really rude and inconsiderate professor.  Last semester I mistakenly booked a flight the morning of our final exam, and he would not allow me to take the exam early.  I sent him a very polite and friendly e-mail explaining that moving my flight would cost an additional $300, and that this would be somewhat of a financial burden for me since I am not wealthy; I pretty much GROVELED asking to please take the exam a day early.  His response was essentially 'too bad, it's not my problem'.  While he was correct, it was not his problem,  I found his response to be very inconsiderate, especially given the fact that he knew I was under a great deal of mental and psychological distress given my boyfriend's deployment in Iraq at the time.  (To put it in perspective a bit, just this semester I've taken a test early for a different professor THREE TIMES.)

I've been very ill lately, partially from general stress of being in my last semester, and partially remnants of my emotional problems of last year.  As a result, I've missed two classes this semester.  Today I received an email from my professor stating that my absences, "Coupled with your almost absolute lack of participation in the classes you have attended" are "entirely unacceptable".  He is "waiting to hear from you some reasons
why you shouldn't just drop the course".  

I'm in a very fragile state right now, just getting out of bed in the mornings is a real struggle some days.  Last semester before all of this started when I first went to him to discuss my troubles he seemed very understanding and supportive, but this email sent me into a crying fit and I haven't been able to get any work done tonight because of it.  I'm loathe to confront this man for multiple reasons:  I need his course to graduate and he could make it very difficult for me, and he's not only tenured, but the head of the department.  Any advice?
