The Lexus LS is a large size luxury sedan that serves as a flagship model of Lexus, which is the luxury division of Toyota. Four generations of these sedan have been produced, and they all have been equipped with the V8 engines and also rear-wheel drive, although since the year 2006 all-wheel drive, hybrid, and long-wheelbase variants have been offered.
In its largest market, the U.S., the Lexus LS was top-selling flagship luxury sedan for 15 of the 17 years that followed its debut. In Japan, the 2007 Lexus LS 460 attracted many orders, as the Lexus has successfully gone to its class. Soon after the introduction of Lexus LS 460 , it expanded global launch in 2007, sales of the Lexus flagship have now increased from outside the brand's traditional U.S. strongholds. By the year 2007, the Lexus LS ranked second globally in the flagship sales, which is next to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class' 85,500 units, and with 71,760 Lexus LS sedans sold worldwide, and more than half of them coming from outside the U.S. market.] In the year 2008, U.S. sales fell almost 42% in the later 2000 recession, mirroring the overall decline of luxury car market. The Lexus LS has not sold in Europe as well , where Lexus suffers brand recognition, image, and a less developed dealership network. Lexus LS has ranked second in the sales to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and also ahead of rivals from BMW, Audi, and Jaguar in markets outside Europe, such as South Africa.
