I have my questions regarding the olfactory indicators used in certain industries. I want to know that would it be true to say that the onion, clove and vanilla essence are olfactory indicators? If they really happen to be the olfactory indicators then what could possibly be their effect on acids and base?

An indicator is something that tells you something - in chemistry it is something that changes color to tell the pH or more simply if something is an acid or a base. A simple indicator is litmus paper which is made from the litmus plant. The paper turns or stays red in the presence of an acid and turns or stays blue in the presence of a base. Other indicators are more specific and give more narrow ranges of pH. Another natural indicator is cabbage juice which turns different colors according to their respective pH. The meaning of olfactory indicator is that this is a compound that one can smell and detect. For this reason vanilla, clove and onion, they all are olfactory indicators as these do not give their distinct odour in highly alkaline or basic medium. In other words we can say that these are olfactory indicators because olfactory indicators are the substances that help us to detect whether a substance is acidic or basic on the basis of change in their odour. Apart from these olfactory indicators there are some other as well and they include eugenol, thymol, vanillin, and thiophenol.
