It was not the only way the war could have been won. At this point the war in Europe was already over with the defeat of Germany. The Allies wanted to finish the war in Asia as quick as possible and decided to drop a nuclear bomb on Japan rather than sending in thousands of more soldiers and spending millions, if not billions of addition dollars. When the Allies asked Japan to surrender they did not and the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and when Japan refused to surrender again a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The casualties and destruction of the two cities were so substantial that Japan decided to surrender before they received any more damage from further bombings.
