The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) offers a wide and varied range of housing options as well as all the ammenities and infrastructure a home owner could hope for. I am going to try my best to answer this question as someone who grew up in Toronto but now sees it through the eyes of a new father.

The following three areas are a little bit outside of the heart of Toronto's downtown, but offer great neighbourhoods, schools and facilities:

    1. Burlington - my top choice as a scenic and safe area

    2. Markham

    3. Richmond Hill

    4. Vaughan - popularity has led to a lot of new houses in the area

In terms of being closer to downtown, expect to shell out more money for an older home in the following excellent areas:

    1. The Beaches - filled wife cafes, family friendly locations and within 30 minutes of public transport to downtown.

    2. Bloor Village / High Park - mature trees and quiet streets make this a great place to raise a family

    3. Leaside - known for excellent schools and great access to transportation routes.
