What are the reasons of low agriculture productivity in India?

    India has very low productivity in agriculture and it is the result of the following factors:
   
   • One of the main reasons of low productivity in India is that it has poor infrastructure and services for the allocation of water resources.
   
   • Low rate of Illiteracy and general socio-economic backwardness, slow development in implementing land reforms and insufficient finance and marketing services for farm development.
   
   • Inconsistent government policies for the agricultural subsidies and taxes usually modified without notice for short term political ends.
   
   • The total size of land holdings is very small and is subject to fragmentation because of land ceiling acts, and in some situations, family disputes. These small holdings are usually over-manned, resulting in disguised unemployment and low productivity of labor.
   
   • Adoption of modern agricultural techniques and use of technology is less, hampered by ignorance of such strategies, high costs and impracticality in the case of small land holdings.
   
   • Irrigation facilities are not sufficient; according to a survey only 52.6% of the land was irrigated in 2003–04, which result in farmers still being dependent on rainfall, especially on the Monsoon season. A good monsoon results in an increased growth for the economy as a whole, while a mild monsoon leads to a sluggish growth. All the credits of farms are handled by NABARD, which is the statutory apex agent for rural development in the India. But on the same time over pumping can cause an alarming drop in aquifer levels.
