I have been listening a lot about the term called yeast infection but have hardly ever heard about the causes. I often get confused if the two terms are being used interchangeably but the symptoms I happen to know for fungal infections are quite different from what I have heard for yeast infection. Hence I would like to make myself clear on what causes yeast infection?

The yeast infections are caused by different species of a yeast-like fungus known as Candida, mainly the species Candida albicans. Hence the yeast organisms are part of the germs such as bacteria that are usually found on various parts of the body and generally they have no definite symptoms. The Candida yeasts are present quite commonly in human beings, and their growth is somehow restricted by the human immune system and certain other microorganisms, like bacteria present in the same locations in the human body. Consequently, it can be said that a weak immune system is a major cause of yeast infections.
