What causes a stroke?

A stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) occurs when there is a sudden loss of blood supply to the brain. This results in a sudden loss of brain function and can be caused by a blockage (clot) or hemorrhage.
The following are risk factors for strokes: old age, high blood pressure, diabetes, previous strokes, high cholesterol and smoking. Strokes are the second leading cause of death worldwide.
