I have a friend who was talking about his alma mater. What does that mean and what was he referring to?
Tags: alma, mater, mean
Alma mater is Latin for "nourishing mother". In modern times, the term is used to describe the educational institution that one has attended and subsequently graduated from, a brick and mortar institution that nourishes by way of education and knowledge. According to Wikipedia, the term can also be used to reference the school's official song.
The term was used in older times by Christians to describe the Virgin Mary. I am guessing your friend was referring to the school he attended and graduated from. The plural is almae matres.
