The answer to this question depends on a multitude of factors including the following: seniority, the airline that you fly for and where in the world you fly. Pilots are well paid as the work that they due has an impact on people who chose to travel through the air.

According to the U.S. Air Line Pilots Association, the average captain of a major airline's fleet earns about $180,000 a year. A major airline is one that earns upwards of 1 billion sales annually, qualifying the likes of American Airlines, Delta, Southwest etc. Captains are on average 50 years of age and have 18 years of flying experience.

In contrast, a non-major airline captain earns an annual salary of $70,000, stark contrast to the salary total above. They are usually 41 years old and have 10 years of high level flying experience.
