I wear pretty conservatively coloured lipsticks most days of the week. This morning I was putting some on when it hit me...I have no idea what is in my lipstick. What is lipstick made of?

Lipstick is basically composed of wax, oils and pigments for colouration. Most lipsticks are solid, a result of the wax used to make them which solidifies when cooled. The most commonly used waxes include beeswax and Carnauba wax.

In terms of oils, they are added to provide moisturizing and can be replaced by fats in certain cases. Oils and fats that are more commonly used include olive oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, petroleum and often times pig fat.

Beyond the above as well as the required coloured dyes that give colour, other items can be added to lipsticks to make them glossy and shimmery. This includes things like fish scales, mica and synthetic pearl particles.
