The large size of India makes it difficult to analyze the effects of HIV on the country as a whole. The last area of states within India have a higher population as compare to the most African countries, so a more detailed picture of the crisis can be obtained by looking at each state separately. The HIV prevalence data for most states is collected through testing pregnant women at antenatal centers. While this shows that the data are only directly relevant to sexually active women, they still give a reasonable indication as to the overall HIV prevalence of each part. The mentioned states have recorded the highest levels of HIV prevalence at antenatal and sexually transmitted disease (STD) centers over present years:

    • Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh present in the southeast of the country and its total population is approximately is 76 million, of whom 6 million live in or around the city of Hyderabad. The HIV prevalence at antenatal clinics was 1percent in 2007. This number is smaller than the reported 1.26% during 2006, but remains the highest out of all states. HIV prevalence at STD centers was very high at 17 percent in 2007.

    • Goa: Goa, a popular tourist place, is a very small state in the southwest of India and its total population is 1.4 million. In 2007 HIV prevalence among antenatal and STD clinic attendees was 0.18 percent and 5.6% respectively.26 The Goa State AIDS Control Society mentioned that in 2008, a record number of 26,737 people were tested for HIV and out of which 1018 tested positive.

    • Karnataka:  is one of the diverse state in the southwest of India, has a population of around 53 million. HIV prevalence among antenatal clinic attendees increased one percent from 2003 to 2006, and reduced to 0.5% in 2007.
