The Treaty of Versailles is one of the peace treaties at the end of the First World War, and is the most famous. It ended the war and was signed on June 28, 1919, which was 5 years to the day after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which was what started the war. Possibly the most controversial part of the treaty was Article 231, with Germany being forced to accept the responsibility of Germany and its allies in causing the war and thus was forced to pay for the cost of the war. The reparations were totaled at 132 billion Marks, $31.4 billion U.S. or $6.6 billion pounds. That amount is equivalent to $442 billion U.S. or $284 billion pounds.
