The main cause of skin cancer is high exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from sunlight and sun beds.

Skin cancer is the most common example of cancer at present. It is calculated by the Cancer Research UK that there are 100,000 new cases of skin cancer are being detected every year. Skin cancer is predicted to twice in the next 10 to 20 years. There are two major types of skin cancer:

    • Melanoma skin cancer

    • Non-melanoma skin cancer

Melanoma is recorded as the least common skin cancer but it is probably the most serious type. There are over 8,000 new cases each year in the UK and 1,800 deaths. At present many people passed away due to Melanoma in the UK than in Australia. It is the second most common cancer in the young population between the ages of 20 - 39. It is calculated that nearly 85% of cases of skin cancer are caused due to excessive exposure of sunlight.

Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common example of skin cancer. The majority of these are called Basal Cell Carcinomas. These are usually localized growths caused due to too much cumulative exposure to the sun and do not tend to spread. In contrast, Squamous Cell Carcinomas, which also occur on the skin, do have a tendency to spread to other parts of the body.
