What is the difference between a 3-4 defence and a 4-3 defence in American football?

The difference between a 3-4 defense and a 4-3 alignment has to do with how the front 7 players of a defence line up as well as the roles that they serve. In football, a defence fields 11 players. In standard 'base' formations, four of these players line up to cover the offensive team's pass catchers as well as act as the last line of defence. These players are known as the defensive secondary. This leaves 7 other players whose job is to act as the first line of defence and to control the field from their close proximity to the offense.
A 4-3 defense features 4 'down' linemen and 3 linebackers who play behind them. In a 3-4 alignment, the number of 'down' linemen is 3 while 4 linebackers play behind them. Linebackers are required to run, tackle and often cover players, requiring athleticism, speed and strength. Down linemen are required to be explosive and large. 3-4 linemen are large and strong, required to hold their position and disrupt the offense. 4-3 linemen are faster and more athletic and aid in rusing the opposing team's quarterback.
