What is the history of US involvement in southeast Asia ?

I am getting my college degree on my own, I was just doing extra research to form my own opinion about Southeast Asia.

      There are three main reasons that led to United States active involvement in South East Asia. Inititally it came to assist its ally, France, in their struggle to maintain their colonial holdings in Vietnam. Subsequently, to honor treaty obligations with the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). Final and the destructive  Involvement was thought to be necessary to prevent communism from taking control completely in that area.
