    Vitiligo is a condition surrounded by myth. Michael Jackson is a legend, all saw the radical color change suffered by the singer, and around it were many speculations. The reality is that this disease goes beyond aesthetics, it affects the self-esteem of the sufferer.

    According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD, for its acronym in English), Vitiligo is a disorder in which the skin loses melanocytes (cells that produce pigment) and manifests as smooth white spots. Appears regularly on the eyes, face, hands, feet, elbows, knees, underarms, English, navel and genitals.

    The causes of this disease are not well defined yet. However, all experts agree that it may after a rare show physical trauma (such as blows to the head) or accompanying other diseases such as Addison's, diabetes, pernicious anemia or diseases thyroid.

    The Academy ensures that the main cause is stress were detected, both physical and emotional and psychological. This failure triggers the immune system to destroy the pigment -producing cells. Another common cause is genetic.

    This disease has no cure yet. However, there are many treatments to improve the quality of life of patients. There are cases in which the spread of the disease is stopped, but not reversed. Phototherapy and some ointments are the most widely used.
