The dash board shows the check engine light when inside the Catalytic converter the exhaust gases have high levels of unburned hydrocarbons, vehicles with OBD-2 diagnostic systems are designed in such a way that if there catalytic converter starts to malfunction, the dashboard show's the "Engine Check" light.
