In my opinion, one of the best budgeting experts around is Gail Vaz-Oxlade, author and television host of Til Debt Do Us Part. Her systems says that your money should go to your immediate needs as follows:
35% - housing (your mortgage and bills related to the house)
25% - life (gorceries and day to day expenses)
15% - transportation (your car, insurance and transportation passes)
15% - debt repayment (we all have a little debt, no?)
10% - savings (a dollar saved is a dollar earned)
