Brazil declared its independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822, and became a constitutional monarch, known as the Empire of Brazil. In 1808 the Prince regent Joao VI fled from Portugal to Brazil during Napoleon’s invasion, but would return to Portugal later, leaving his son Pedro to rule Brazil. Pedro declared Brazil’s independence on September 7, 1822, and became Brazil’s first emperor. The Empire of Brazil at that time consisted of what is now known as Brazil and Uruguay.
