The United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917, after the Zimmermann Telegram was intercepted by British intelligence and decoded. It revealed that Germany proposed for Mexico to join the Central Powers as Germany resumed their all-out submarine warfare which would attack all ships heading to Britain. This meant that Germany would have to attack American ships and would force the U.S. to enter the war. Germany wanted Mexico to keep the U.S. occupied, which would slow down ships heading to Britain. In return Germany offered to finance Mexico in the war and to help recover former Mexican territories of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
