Passengers who have purchased spirits, perfume or other liquids in US Duty Free shops and who are changing flights at European airports to fly on to other EU countries, have until now had to check in their shopping bags containing the duty free items. The EU has relaxed this regulation: this relaxation applies to Singapore, South Korea and Croatia and latterly also to passengers from the USA and Canada, who in future will be able to keep their shopping bags on board with them. However, a prerequisite for taking these bags on board is that the prescribed duty-free items are sealed in a special transparent, tamper-proof bag and that an onward flight takes place within the EU. From 2013 onwards passengers in the EU will generally be able to take liquids on board with them again. The ban on liquids in hand luggage was introduced in 2006 following several attempts by terrorists to detonate liquid explosives in aircraft.
Before your flight, therefore, please check the website of your departure airport to find out which hand luggage regulations are in force there.
Specific regulations may also apply to carrying liquid or gel Duty Free items in hand baggage, depending on your destination. Please enquire about these at the local point of sale.
Lufthansa exerts no influence on these legal stipulations and asks passengers to bear them in mind already when preparing for a trip and to reduce hand luggage to the bare minimum.
You are therefore advised to check the website of the relevant departure airport before your flight to find out which regulations apply.
