The Royal Pavilion is a former royal residence located in Brighton, England. It was built in three stages; the original beginning of it is in 1787, as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, from 1811 Prince Regent. The Royal Pavilion is often referred to as the Brighton Pavilion. It is built in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in India for most of the 19th century, with the most extravagant chinoiserie interiors ever executed in the British Isles. Its fantastic domes and spires make it an easily recognizable icon, to both residents and visitors to Brighton & Hove alike. The Royal Pavilion was the creation of George, Prince of Wales, later to become the Prince Regent. 'Prinny', as he was known, was a larger than life character, given to excesses of drinking, eating, and general carrying-on. In 1815 the Prince Regent hired John Nash to expand the Marine Pavillion and create an Indian pleasure palace, with Eastern domes, turrets, and minartets. This Nash did, over a period of 8 years. After the death of George IV in 1830, his successor King William IV also stayed in the Pavilion on his frequent visits to Brighton. The British government sells the Royal Pavilion to the Brington town for 53,000 pounds in 1850.
