Gabriel Landeskog holds the record for being the youngest captain at 19 years and 286 days. He was named captain for the Colorado Avalanche on September 4, 2012, and his first game was captain was on January 19, 2013. The reason for the gap was because of the lockout that took place during this period. He was 20 years and 57 days on the day of his first game as captain. He surpassed the record Sidney Crosby set in 2007 when he was 19 years and 297 days of him being announced as captain and 20 years and 59 years when he played his first game as captain.
