    The Great Wall of China was originally built in an east to west direction on its northern border to protect it from invasions from other countries. It began with the construction of various walls around the 7th century BC and later was unified into what is now the Great Wall. Over the centuries the Wall has been rebuilt, maintained and enhanced. Other purposes of the Great Wall was controlling immigration and emigration, trade, and creating duties on goods being transported.
