It has been a clear, sunny day with temperatures reaching into the high 20s and the forecast is good. But predicted thunderstorms may force the cancellation of Melbourne's New Year's Eve fireworks. Storms are forecast to roll across the city late in the evening to close out a sweltering day on which temperatures were tipped to hit 40 degrees in parts of the city.     2011 new year eve events took place at Melbourne, as they were scheduled. Weather was fine and the new year went by smoothly.
