Xerox Phaser 6120 paper jam in tray 1

There is nothing stuck in the printer and it says "paper jam in tray 1"

    For a while I could just open the cover and close the cover and the printer would work as expected... for a little bit.
    Lately it's been a lot worse.

    I just tried opening the cover and raising up the green tabs (like if you're printing envelopes... but I was printing on regular paper). The ink didn't get fused to the paper... I could smudge it with my fingers. But I ran off about 30 sheets that way.

    I put the green tabs back down and got the jam message once or twice but was able to open/close the cover and finish the job.

    This isn't really an answer as much as just more information, and maybe a stop-gap measure.
