    Hi,
Since the area of your scalp hair loss is so specific, thyroid problems may not be the cause.  However, you want to make sure that your TSH is within normal range.  Because of the pain this could be Neurologic in which case you should see a Neurologist.  Shingles can cause such a pain which can last for a long time as in Post Herpetic Neuralgia.  I would initially treat the area with cortisone shots to see if the pain resolves.  There is also a condition called Atypical Pain Syndrome which is treated with low doses of anit-depressants.  If there are no skin lesions that can explain the pain then you need to visit your local Neurologist.
