    Hi,
AMP does is not a comparison [or a good one, or reliable one, or a figure used with meaning] when sizing an electric motor,

The difference and {everyone forgets this} is effeiciency of the motor, 1 3hp might take 30 amps to produce 30HP, another might take 21, depending on effeceincy.

E is the metal the motor is made out of, the internal conductor sizes, hundreds of factors.

Next torque and horsepower while you can translate, does not mean a 3 HP has the same torque as another brand.

Torque on nema motors is a letter on the nameplate called the code letter , usually A, B, C, D

A for heavy starts, B for most normal, C for flywheel type starts, much like A only somewhat weaker, and D the NEMA strongest for AC.

So no rule of thumb. This is why motor application is such a science unto itself.

    Please read:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_motor

    and http://www.electricmotors.com/sizing.html

    For your generator idea: http://www.gillettegenerators.com/sizing/sizing03.html

Now read through those and you will be way ahead of the game.

Single phase motors are about 50/50 if they are reversible.

Here is the catch on that, reversible and instantly reversible are two different things.

Motors are rated with so many stops and starts per hour, if a motor reverses a lot, it takes up a lot of the starts and stops, [or generally does]

Is your house voltage 50 cycle or 60?

The rating above is 50, a 60 cycle will run faster than a 50 rated, something else to consider.

Your question about 3 versus 4HP, HP won't be linear to torque, it is in the links above, it should be more but by how much depends on the specific two motors.

You ask great questions I can't really answer specifically as I do not know your application, it is more difficult to roll in one direction than the the other?

I also noticed you have a 6 lead three phase motor, my guess is that is used for wye start delta run a kind of start [soft start] bu configuration of the windings externally and using a multitude of contactors to get the job done.

My over all guess and advice at this point, is single phase will fall flat on it's face, it cannot be soft started and I think you need that.

I think you need a convertor and do this right.

But I don't know if this is a 200 dollar piece of equipment or a 200,000 dollar device.

three phase to single phase conversion sometimes work, but it is so rare and so much work it is not worth the result,

Not saying yours wont, but it seems as if you are taking industrial equipment and trying to run it off home power.

I wish I could say for sure on this and that, but not knowing what exactly all you plan to do makes it impossible, I just think you HAVE to assess the application, worth and so on, then spend the apporpriate amount to do it right.

it is common for everyone to think a motor is a motor but they are all so differnent with all these paraments that it is very very tricky.

As you gain some knowledge, let me know and we can talk specific which we have to.

Trying to save you money and aggrivation in the long run.

No, A three phase motor cannot be made to run on single phase, there are ways to add capacitors and to one leg and maybe it sort of works, but it will cost you more for a chance, and then not a real good way to go.

Best bet is to get a phase converter. It will change your house hold voltage to three phase and allow you to have dynamic braking, reverse and balanced current.

Not sure what part of the country you are in, but we do have converters, and have sold several of them on here to resolve this issue.

You have a good three phase motor, so spend what is needed to get it running like it was designed to run.
