The cooking oil industry in Pakistan is essentially centered around the production of vegetable ghee from imported vegetable oils, and to a smaller extent, from traditional and nontraditional oilseeds grown in Pakistan. Until the mid 1970s domestic production of edible oils was adequate to meet 75 per cent of domestic requirements. in 1971, edible oil imports were 46,000 tons. By 1984-85 imports had reached 664,000 tons and continued to climb to 1,231,000 tons in 1993-94 (Table-VI). In recent years imports of edible oil has declined to 800,000 tonnes in 1995-96. in 199596, edible oils constituted 7.2 per cent of Pakistan's total imports, thus underscoring the importance of the industry and its impact on the country's foreign exchange. The total tonnage of edible oil imported in fiscal year 1996 was 800,000 metric tons at a value of US$852.1 million, consisting of $97,000 tonnes of RBD palm oil and 343,000 metric tons of soyabean oil. E.m. Oil Mills  Ltd Karachi, Gulf Edible Oils (pvt) Ltd, Habib Oil Mills (pvt) Ltd, Iqbal Enterprises (pvt) Ltd and Ismail Oil & Ghee Mills (pvt) Ltd are the top companies in pakistan.
