   Hi There,
   Legitimate publication, the kind that puts books in stores, costs the author nothing but postage and printing costs. With or without an agent, the money flows toward the writer (Yog's Law).
   
   If you budget $25 or so for query letters (printing and postage) and mailing the manuscript to the ones your query snags, that should be plenty.
   
   Any time an agent or publisher wants money from you, that's all the indicator you need to end contact, because they're not legitimate.
