duty on car
Tags: car, duty
The vast majority of countries, particularly those in Europe, most of Asia as well as Canada and the U.S. require vehicles manufactured for sale in other countries to be charged with a duty when being imported into their country. A duty is a mandatory tax that is required as a payment to the state mainly relating to customs.
In Canada, vehicles from the U.S. made within the past 15 years must qualify for importation under the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program. This program falls under the Canada Border Service Agency's jurisdiction.
If your vehicle qualifies, it may be subject to duty, excise tax as well as goods and service tax (GST) or harmonized sales tax (HST) in certain provinces when you license the vehicle. Taxes are based on several factors and determine based on your car's unique identifier; its VIN number.
All the information you need to know regarding importation of a vehicle into Canada can be found here.
