how do I replace the door handle for a Maytag microwave oven model MMV5165

I can get a new door handle but can't figure out how to remove/replace the item

    I got the inside border panel off and can see the 2 screws that hold the handle. I have the correct screww driver but the screws aren't lined up with the gaps in the inside panel so you can't get at the screws.
