    Change your batteries

Remove the unit from the mounting bracket and unplug the power connector. Remove the battery and hold in the TEST button for up to a minute. It should make one last beep and then sort of a deflating sound as soon as you press the TEST button when it is completely without power. This will reset the "memory" aspect of the unit. Replace the battery, then re-connect the power supply. Re-mount and you should be good to go. I was going to take a baseball bat to mine before I found this solution. Good luck!

THANK YOU!! OK, before I lose my mind... which cord is the power connector you speak of? I have 2-3 hard wires coming thru... black, white and maybe a red...but specifically remember a black and a white, thick and capped. I am sorry, I was standing on tall wire shelving (that I probably shouldn't have been) and stretching to the side 2 feet to reach the darn thing. These 2-3 wires came out of the unit at one central point and then up into the ceiling. I don't remember a power connector or AC/DC type of plug. I don't want to go tackle this beast again until I know what I am going in for.... :-)  Pleeeease help....

OK, I found that all 3 wires (yes, there was also a red) disconnected together at the source on the unit all in one pull. So, I did the rest, per you instructions... and STILL CHIRPING. I then decide to change all batteries throughout the house, even though the other units not chirping... b/c I have been told since they are interconnected the chirping from one could be a signal from another....and guess what? 2 of the 3 others are now also chirping. WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?? I am going to go bananas.......... Anyone, PLEASE HELP.........

I guess the continuous chirping problem in your Kidde 1276, is caused by sensor pads, and they need a little cleaning. You can open it up and clean the sensor pad-round white cloth thing-with rubbing alcohol, let it air dry a couple of minutes, then put the battery back in.
