   Families is "more than one family"
   Family's is an object or term belonging to the family.
   Aside of that.. I'll be honest. I have no idea which term you use for "an object or term belonging to more than one family"

   Im going to invite both my mom and dad's extended families to dinner.  The hot dogs were the Smith Family's resposibility, because it's the smith family's hot dog warmer.  The families will have a great time.
