You need to choose the option of Custom installation during upgrading your personal computer from Windows XP to Windows 7. A custom installation does not save your programs, files, or settings. Because of that it is known as a "clean" installation.

A custom installation is considered more complex, and it could usually take more than two hours to complete installation process.

Before starting installation you need to do following:

    • You will have to shift off your important files from your personal computer before you start the installation of Windows 7. To make the process easier, Microsoft recommends a free download known Windows Easy Transfer that requires an external hard disk. These are easily available at electronics and computer hardware stores. These external drives provide extra storage space to your computer.

    • After the installation of Windows 7, you will have to install your programs again manually When you start running Windows. Easy Transfer will allow you to get a report that lists the programs that you are currently in use with Windows XP.

    32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7:

Windows 7 package has both 64-bit and 32-bit installation discs. Windows 7 with 64-bit operating systems require 4 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM) or more to perform task more efficiently as compared to 32-bit operating systems. However, old model of computers are not capable to run on 64-bit.

You will require the 32-bit version, but to be sure that you click Start, then right-click on My Computer, and further press Properties.
