Question:

is my friend cutting herself?

today at school i was sitting by my friend and i noticed cuts on both her left and right rists. i have known her since kindergarden and i have never noticed her being sad or depressed. But when we got to middle school i did. last year in 7th she got very depressed. but she has mostly worn either long sleeves or zip up jackets to school. even when i saw her over the summer she did. so when i saw that today i was surprized and i was concerned. she told me that her cat did it to her. but even though i havent been to her house in a while i dont even think that she has a cat? but she told me that and what i immediately thought was, she is cutting herself! but i didnt say anything. the cuts did not look like cat or dog scratches because i get scratches from dogs and my cat and they dont look like that. the cuts were strieght across her rist and there were about 5 or 6 of them. they were the same on both rists and she colered over them with red marker. but i really wasnt surprized because she always draws on herself. but thats just her. the cuts on her wrists were also not puffed up like cat scratches get and usually if a cat would scratch you it would rarely we on both of your wrists and the same on both. also it wouldnt show up as all 5 nails on you only like 1 or 2. they were also skinney and percised and from what i read all the things she did to hide them were what people do to hide there "cutting." i talked to my mom about it and since she knows her mom and is like a second mom to her she is also is very concerend she told me to look at it again tomorrow and if i am sure that it is than me and my mom will call the school annonomously and say that we want her to go see a councler but i also think that i should talk to her before i do that? i think she needs to be reminded that i am here for her?

so what should i do? do you think that she is "cutting?" and if so should i talk to her before i call the school?

Sounds like she's cutting herself, yes. Does she have scars from previous cuts as well? You should definitely talk to her. One thing that helped one of my friends - and forgive me if this sounds crazy - was to tell him that he should get a tattoo on his arm instead of cutting himself. It will hurt but it will also look good. Also it might work to help them stay away from cutting because tattoos can't be done on arms that are too cut.
