    Hi,
The Leapster itself resembles other hand held electronic games on the market. Ours is silver with blue accents, but there are other colored versions available as well including a pink edition. A soft plastic cover folds down to protect the screen and folds back and snaps in place while the toy is in use so it isn’t in the way. A stylus type pen is attached at the bottom and again snaps into place when not in use. One of the things I appreciate about LeapFrog products is the fact that they’ve taken storage into consideration when developing their toys. Nothing hangs loose or dangles when the toy is not in use meaning that we don’t have to spend hours looking for the stylus that was swallowed by the toy monster, never to be seen again.

The top of the unit has a slot for the game cartridges. Once in place, these stay put, although they are small enough to fall prey to the toy monster. Thankfully, so far we have only the one that came with the unit and it stays inside all the time. Also on the top of the unit is the power button and a volume control complete with 12 volume levels, a headphone jack, AC adapter, and controls for brightness. Of course the headphones are not included, neither is the AC adapter. They never are, are they?

The front of the unit contains a 4” (measured diagonally) 12 bit color backlit display. I wasn’t expecting much for a toy, but was amazed at how sharp and detailed the images are. To the left of the screen there is a directional control allowing movement up, down, left, right and above this there are three small buttons – home, hint, and pause. To the right of the screen there are two additional buttons “A” and “B”. The whole thing measures approximately 8” at its widest point and is small enough to be easily handled by a four year old, yet heavy enough to be inappropriate for younger children.
