   Hey,
   
   i think the beam will do a great help.  
   
   w10x22 is bigger then some beams used to support house floors.  it will stop sag.
   
   there's not much engineering needed.  
   
   i'd put 3 2x6's under each end make sure there is 3" bearing  on each end.  
   
   you'll have to support the roof/ceiling while you do this.  
   
   without seeing the garage i can't really give details on how to get beam in there.  
   
   is the exterior brick?   this could pose extra work.  sometimes the steel lintel is bolted to the wood header.
